Moon Shadow is an eight-year-old boy, who lives in China. The area where he lives is called the Middle Kingdom. At the start of the story, we learn that Moon Shadow's father has sent for him to join him in America. His father had left China before he was born, and the two had never met. Moon Shadow is described as a strong, intelligent boy, who loves his family.
