Why is it that the chronicler doesn't appear to die before Raistlin's eyes?

The chronicler doesn't appear to die before Raistlin's eyes because he is above death. He was at Krynn for the first life that was born and would be at Krynn for the last life to die, as was foretold. It is his duty to transcribe what is going on in the world of Krynn, to record it for the knowledge, and to place his works on an alter to make the world complete at the end of time.
