Why did those that loved understand Tanis and his actions?

Those that loved understood Tanis and his actions and lies to the group because they knew what they would do for the one they loved. They could easily put themselves in Tanis' shoes and in doing so, understood that they would have never trusted him if he had told them the truth outright.
