Why did Tas and his parents come through the side gate of the city?

Tas and his parents came through the side gate of the city because they wanted to go into the city, and weren't allowed there. They always felt it was an oversight by someone in charge though, as why should the kender be put in the same category as goblins? However, they thought it rude to complain, so just came and went by the side gate.
