Why, despite the absurdity that was Tanis' story, did Maq believe him?

Maq believed him because she had learned to be an excellent judge of men, as she had to be with the rough crew she commanded. She knew that Tanis was holding things back, but also knew that he wasn't holding anything back about the danger they were all in. So despite how absurd the story seemed, Maq believed him.
