The argument that Caramon made to Par-Salian, the white robed mage that was overseeing Raistlin's trial was that the young mage didn't really think about the consequences of failure when he undertook the tests. Caramon explained that although Raistlin had done well, he was tired and dying and needed Caramon's help.
