Who is Murtagh from Dragonfly in Amber and what is their importance?

Murtagh is Jaime's oldest friend. Jaime trusts him implicitly, and in return, he receives nothing but loyalty. Murtagh watches out for Claire throughout the novel, and he even comes to love her. He was skeptical when she arrived out of nowhere.
