Once Amal and Mrs. Vasell have started to build a friendship of sorts, Mrs. Vaselli confides in Amal about a miscarriage she once had. She describes working for sometimes 20 hours a day in the fish and chips shop she and her husband owned and operated together, with no outside help. She tells Amal that she had to work late into her pregnancies, since they had to put food on the table. One time, she was working hard and she felt cramps coming on, so she hurried to the bathroom.
