I think Australian values are merely a backdrop to bring out the cultural conflicts characters feel trying to fit into society. Take, for example, Adam's party. His Party symbolizes the differences between Amal and Adam. The party is wilder than Amal imagined, and she allows herself to be in a situation outside her normal habits because she is anxious for a deeper friendship with Adam. It is during this party that Amal discovers Adam wants more than a platonic friendship. Amal must face the fact that she has led Adam to believe that could happen. There are other cultural marks like the hijab which characters must reconcile with fitting into mainstream culture.
