Amal is telling the reader in Chapter 6 about some harassment she is experiencing in the moment at her school. Amal states, "This morning I'm in the hallway when I overhear some girls talking about me next to their lockers" (63). She hears one of them say something about being oppressed and "the other one is saying something about [her] looking like a dag" (63). When Amal discusses her reaction to these comments, she says that she wants to march up to the girls to tell them off. She adds, however, that she ultimately exercises restraint instead. She says, "I walk slowly away, feeling like a boiling kettle of water about to whistle and screech" (64).
