What does the old man stand for or symbolize?

Faustus represents the prideful man who wants to be rich and famous. This does not work out for him, however, because to become rich and famous he sells his soul to the devil. Pride is one of the Seven Deadly Sins, and Faustus finds out first hand why that is.
