Chou's Chinatown Blues play is symbolic of systemic racism. During Chou's lifetime, the play was never performed on stage. When the Barnes theater program decides to perform the play, Barnes students protest. As Ingrid discovers when she views the play on opening night, Chinatown Blues reveals the cultural reality she has been trying to deny for years. Watching the play forces her to recognize the racism that defines her culture.
