Who is Ed French from Different Seasons and what is their importance?

Ed French is the guidance counselor at Todd's school. When he asks to meet with Todd's family, Todd manipulates Dussander into passing himself off as his grandfather. French eventually gets wise to their ruse, and Todd subsequently kills him.
