Why does Greg's mom think that things were better when she was young, and why does Greg disagree?

Greg's mom says that when she was young things were better because everybody in town knew everybody else. It was like one giant family. That does not sound good to Greg, because he likes his privacy, and he does not want everyone knowing his personal business.
