How does the author use foreshadowing in Desperate Characters?

Chapter Eight contains a fascinating sort of foreshadowing. Early in the chapter, Sophie reads a brief passage, "Illnesses do their work secretly, their ravages are often hidden." This not only refers to her creeping infection from the cat bite but of her depression surrounding her dying marriage.
