Scobie is so lost in his own hellish paranoia over dying, that he is forgetting to enjoy the moments of life that are flying by him. Abbey, on the other hand, observes and appreciates even the roughest moments of life and, thus, lives it more fully. Abbey knows that it is useless to try to help Roy learn another way of thinking because he is enmeshed in his mental illness and too convinced of his beliefs to change.
