Absolutely. The rapids were an unknown to them and took them by surprise, but were not deadly. They got wet, which surprised them, and were bounced around the river a bit, but are "happy and exultant," feeling ready for more. Deliberately starting out with no information about the trip made everything unexpected and fresh, perhaps as Powell had experienced it.
