Abbey tells us that these people had only a few tasks that had to be done for survival and, other than those, clearly enjoyed their leisure time. They lived in a "food-gathering" economy, and the leisure time allowed them to express their creativity through art. Today's American primarily contributes daily to the humongous capitalistic economy which demands more and better production.
