Sister Ruth brings Hannah colored pencils and paper to make a drawing. Hannah draws a picture of her mother wearing a beautiful long dress. Since she does not have a white pencil, Hannah makes the dress blue. She shows her mother standing near branches that are trying to grab her. Hannah says that late one night Mama was in the woods, she was scared because she had gotten lost. Then Hannah says that her Papa came and found her mama and saved her. They fell in love at first sight. Her father is holding a cloth to tie over Hannah's mother's eyes so she cannot know where the cabin is that Papa takes her to.
