Frank is Ruth’s husband. He opens Frank’s Diner, and he sells American food there because there are already many Oriental restaurants in the area. While they are interned, he works at the mess hall, and eventually after internment moves the family to San Jose because he gets a job offer there. He moves up the ranks and becomes financially successful. He is kind and supportive of Ruth, but he plays a secondary role in the novel, and not much is known about him except through his actions towards Ruth.
