Jiro’s farm is large, and Jiro convinces Taizo to come move to the farm in California because he says he will split the property in half. Jiro is in debt, however, and Taizo has to help him overcome this. Eventually the farm is sold to Sheriff Joseph Dreseen when the bank threatens foreclosure due to the Great Depression, but the family stays on to work the land with the understanding that they can only stay if they turn a profit. They are evicted when they must go to the internment camp because they will not be able to ensure a profit.
