How and why is Colonel Freeleigh a real time machine, though not a mechanical contraption?

Colonel Freeleigh is a living time machine because he can carry the children into past adventures through his real life stories. In their minds and hearts, he is a real machine and because he is close to death all of the memories he stirs are for a sense of life.
