Who is Zemui from Cutting for Stone and what is their importance?

Zemui is Colonel Mebratu's driver. Although he is married with three children, Zemui is also having an affair with Rosina. Because he is illiterate, Zemui asks Marion to read and write all his correspondences, which Marion happily does until he learns about Zemui's relationship with Rosina and loses all respect for the man. Zemui is killed during the rebel uprising to overthrow the Emperor.
