Who is Almaz from Cutting for Stone and what is their importance?

Almaz is Ghosh's maid. She arrives at Missing Hospital, showing all the signs of pregnancy. Sadly, she isn't expecting, but rather, has a benign tumor in her womb/ Devastated, Almaz refuses to leave the Hospital. Over time, Ghosh takes pity on Almaz and hires her as his maid.
