What does Ella warn herself and Emma about in Act One concerning menstruation?

Ella, in both talking to herself and Emma when she enters, warns that a woman should not go swimming when she is menstruating. Ella warns that the water "draws it right out of you". Ella also warns Emma against buying sanitary napkins in a gas station bathroom, explaining that nothing sanitary comes out of a machine like that.
