What surprises James Jarvis most about people’s reaction to his son’s death?

James is surprised by the enormous outpouring of grief for his son. He did not realize how widespread Arthur’s influence was, nor how many people supported the same cause. James cannot believe how many people of all races and classes attend Arthur’s funeral.
