What does Absalom give as his defense for owning a gun when the Judge asks him about it?

Absalom claims he bought a gun upon coming to Johannesburg because he had heard that the city was dangerous and he would need the weapon to protect himself. He only ever intended to use the gun for self-defense and as a preventive tactic to frighten off potential attackers.
