Kumalo is determined to find ways to keep the village together rather than hemorrhaging young people to the city. His primary activity is to pray for Ndotsheni’s salvation, but he also goes to see the village chief and school headmaster to discuss ways they might revitalize the community’s agriculture, and find more resources to support the village youth. He does not get very far for his efforts, only extracting a vague promise from the chief to visit the magistrate to discuss the village’s ongoing issues.
