Gertrude is surprised to see Kumalo in Johannesburg. She is ashamed of her behavior with liquor and prostitution, and does not feel she deserves to be among the simple and honest villagers again. She ultimately accepts Kumalo’s forgiveness and agrees to go back to Ndotsheni.
