Kumalo and his wife wanted to use their savings to send their son to a good school, but because of the letter from Msimangu, they must now use the money for Kumalo’s travels and searches in Johannesburg to find Gertrude and Absalom. It is a moot point because Absalom has been in the city for a year and they have not heard from him, making it unlikely he will ever return for school.
