Kumalo is shocked at his brother’s ability to speak so eloquently, while Msimangu is relieved that John is too corrupt to use this skill for the greater purpose of instigating a violent uprising. James Jarvis is not particularly impressed by the speech. The police officers who attend the speech are surprised that their superiors do not arrest John Kumalo, but are aware that John is not a true troublemaker; he does not want to end up in jail and will not push his rhetoric to an extreme point.
