Kumalo tells his friend about when James relayed the information to Kumalo about the unknown whereabouts of the villager Sibeko’s daughter, and the way in translating this information, James omitted his relative’s cruel disdain for the fate of the fallen girl. James did not realize Kumalo understood the woman’s English and heard her harshness; he was trying to spare Kumalo that indignity.
