John offers his brother tea, but Stephen refuses this hospitality, still angry at his brother for abandoning Absalom, his nephew, in his time of need. Stephen warns his brother to take better care of his own son, and John promises to do so. Out of spite, Stephen indicates that one of John’s “followers” is a spy who will use John’s private speeches against him politically, making an analogy with Absalom’s “friends” who turned on him. Angry, John kicks his brother out of his shop.
