Whites fear a massive strike by the 300,000 black gold mining laborers, which would grind the South African economy to a halt, and possibly bleed into other industries as well. The actual strike is just a small fraction of the black laborers, and it ends when the police push the laborers back into the mines, killing three workers. The strike ends up being a non-event, but prominent activist groups foreshadow that the tension will erupt into violence eventually if the poor treatment of black workers is not dealt with.
