Barbara Smith claims her former servant turned to making liquor and was sent to jail. She says she does not know or care what has happened to the girl since. James translates this for Kumalo, leaving out the cruelty of Barbara’s indifference to the girl’s fate. This indicates James is compassionate and kind, and cares about the feelings and needs of those who are less fortunate than he is.
