James Jarvis is a wealthy farmer who lives in a prosperous piece of land above the valley where Ndotsheni is. Though his land is also affected by the drought, he is still thriving. Kumalo is a poor village priest, whose people are slowly scattering and dying due to lack of effective agricultural techniques, food, and resources.
