James Jarvis and John Hamilton, Sr. belong to the same generation and are similarly uninterested in the plight of blacks in South Africa. Neither of them understood Arthur’s drive to give blacks better jobs and education. On the other hand, while James has been respectful but indifferent towards the black laborers on his farm, John has a more active distaste and fear of blacks, particularly after a spate of criminal activity afflicting Johannesburg.
