John’s believes the church uses words to fight against unjust laws rather than action, and therefore nothing changes. Yet John himself is unwilling to give up his stable, steady income in order to help the plight of less fortunate blacks either. He calls tribal chiefs ignorant and hates the idea of being under the power of someone he considers inferior, yet he is using his oratory skill and burgeoning wealth to consolidate his own power and develop followers.
