James Jarvis had hoped Arthur would take over the farm at High Place, but was not resentful when his son went into engineering instead. James could not, however, understand his son’s passion for civil rights, and this lack of understanding drove a wedge between them. Arthur’s mother was much more compassionate towards her son’s causes, and therefore remained closer to him.
