Who is Robert Flooter from Crazy Lady! and what is their importance?

Robert Flooter is Maxine's mentally handicapped son. Over the course of the novel, we see Robert come out of his shell.... he learns to count, enjoys gardening, and in the end.... says his very first word. Vernon becomes Robert's first friend.
