Maxine Flooter is the novel's "Crazy Lady!" She is well known to be outspoken, and even, verbally abusive, traits that are augmented by her alcoholism. Over the course of the novel, Maxine befriends Vernon and takes him under her wing. Her own son, Robert, is mentally handicapped.
