Why will Besa not make eye contact with Amari after the white men slaughter the Ewe tribe?

When trying to figure out why Besa will not make eye contact with her, Amari finally lands on the thought that Besa is most likely feeling ashamed and defeated, unable to help himself or his people (most of all his beloved Amari).
