Why does Cato tell Teenie to let Tidbit go in Part Six?

Cato tells Teenie that if Tidbit were to stay on the farm, he would just end up working in the rice and suffering at the hands of Mr. Derby and Clay. He tells Teenie that her boy's only shot at a free life is to escape now.
