Besa now identifies himself as Buck. Since being forced into slavery, he has had five owners, all of whom have treated him savagely--beating him, cutting him, shooting him. He has lost an eye and walks in a stooped position. He is in constant pain. All of Besa's hope is dead, and he trusts no one. He has lost all sense of hope, telling Amari that his spirit "is dead" (258). He will not go with Amari, saying that he has no hope left and has finally settled in with a master who is at least kind to him. He has also found love on the farm--someone who is safe for him because she has "no dreams in her heart" (258).
