What change occurs in Amari as a result of Dr. Hoskins's gift?

Amari, whose only experience with white men has been of violence and evil, never "thought she'd be thanking a white man" (205). However, now that she has experienced a variation in what she has always expected, she can begin to heal and change her view of the world and of people.
