The main conflict in the short-story is both man vs self and man vs society. The Judge presiding over Laura Kimble's case must decide whether he will follow his own conscience or give in to the mood of the people in the courtroom..... the people of the town. In the end, the Judge follows his conscience abd commends the defendant.
