Kusano is Sonoko's older brother and the protagonist's best friend. He is described as a gentle, friendly, and thoughtful young man. At one point, Kusano serves the protagonist's foil. Where Kusano is unable to sleep at night for fear of an air raid, the protagonist is not only indifferent to the safety of his family.
