What does Lalami say about the Melilla border in Morocco? How has it changed since she was a child? What does it aim to keep separate?

When Lalami was growing up in Morocco is was very easy to cross into Melilla. Now, however, Melilla is surrounded by “a twelve-foot-wide ditch, a wall topped with blades, and three metal fences” (59). Cameras, alarms and Spanish patrol guards surround the perimeter. This wall, says Lalami, “segregates Spaniards from Moroccans, Europeans from Africans, Christians from Muslims, and white people from brown or black people” (59).
