Lalami says that poll taxes were implemented in 1870 just after Black men were given the right to vote. Other voting laws that disproportionately impacted the poor were literacy tests and pre-election registration. Additionally, holding voting days on weekdays forces hourly workers to choose to sacrifice some of their pay if they want to vote.
