Lalami says that she lives in the gray zone because; though she is Muslim she does not “keep dietary laws or follow strict rituals” (45). She also speaks out against injustice when moved to do so and “doesn’t support U.S. exceptionalism or military occupations” (45). Finally, Lalami describes her life in the gray zone because she teachers college literature courses and has friends of “all different faiths, or no faith” (45).
